Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
