Minister Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about secret information in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made cars.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in every modern cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
